Centre for Biotechnology: Centre for Biotechnology offers various courses under two departments.
- Department of Biotechnology Department of Biotechnology The Department of Biotechnology was established on July 1999 with two courses – Under Graduate and Post Graduate Degrees in Biotechnology. From the Academic Year 2005-06, it offers M.Sc., Biotechnology (5 Years Integrated) course also. The department is equipped with all facilities needed for a good research department by offering M.Phil., and Ph.D., in Biotechnology. Severall hundreds of graduates and post graduates are passed out from this department and most of the people are working in various biotechnology establishments all over India and abroad. The department had produced 30 M.Phil. and 6 Ph.D. Scholars. Department of Bioinformatics The Department of Bioinformatics has started under the Centre for Biotechnology during the academic year 2003-2004. Initially it started with the post graduate course in Bioinformatics and the under graduate course in Bioinformatics is started for this academic year (2004-2005). Bioinformatics has proved to be a powerful tool for advanced research and development in the field of biotechnology. Bioinformatics holds out strong expectations of reducing the cost and time of development of new products such as new drugs and vaccines, plants with specific properties and resistance to pests and diseases, new protein molecules and biological materials and properties. As the full genome sequences, data from micros arrays, proteomics as well as species data at the taxonomic level became available, integration of these databases require sophisticated bioinformatics tools. Bioinformatics in India can be used effectively for promoting research in biology; prospecting; conservation and management of bioresources; evaluation of products, processes and raw materials, managing complex data required to plan and monitor major national programs; and meeting the growing need of contract services and business outsourcing in pharma and biotechnology sectors. |
